We know it’s been a little while since we made a big update to the L16 and Lumen (we don’t count the Mojave update). We are excited to add some big features for both this month, including one that has been asked about since we launched the L16. You can now adjust the depth effect (aperture) on the L16 and even shoot 1080p video. We’ve also made workflow improvements with presets and batch editing across the L16 and Lumen. We hope that you are as excited about these improvements as we are!
Depth-editing on the L16
One of the big benefits of the L16 is the ability to adjust aperture or depth effect after capture. Our team worked hard to build this on the L16 so you can add that beautiful background blur. Now you can adjust your images to f/2.0 and change the focal point using the L16 touch screen. You may notice that the depth effect at f/2.0 is stronger for images shot over 70mm. This is because the 70mm cameras have some natural blur already, leading to an increase in the overall effect.
When we adjust the depth effect on your L16, we use the images from 5 camera modules (up to 13MP quality for easy sharing). Your edits are also included during import to Lumen so you can get the the full 52+ megapixel effect. We will continue to tweak and tune our depth and bokeh, but this update will allow you to create more unique images to share while on the go.
Video recording (beta)
Video has been one of the most requested features on the L16 and we are excited to be releasing a beta video mode! It’s a bit rough still, but we preferred to get this into your hands early. The L16 can now record video at 1080p and 30fps. Unlike the still photographs which use 10+ cameras for every shot, the video recording feature comes from 1 camera.
The video is based on using either the 28mm camera or the 70mm camera. You can record video and digitally zoom all of the way to 150mm. We are still working on other features, including 4K, but we wanted to allow you to capture more with the L16 instead of needing to carry around another device! A few known issues are listed in the video start-up screens, and please feel free to reach out to us with feedback as you use it. As always, you can submit feedback directly from the L16.
Each release we have looked to improve the overall workflow and speed. Our last Lumen update improved export speed, and this month we are adding customizable presets on the L16 and Lumen as well as batch editing in Lumen.
As you edit on the L16, you have the option to save your settings as a preset that can easily be applied to other images. These edits will also carry over to Lumen so you can more quickly create your unique style. Lumen now has batch editing features where you can copy and paste edits across multiple images in a snap.
Finally, we made some small experience improvements on the L16, including adding approximate resolution and a handshake warning. For a full list of features, please see our release notes here. The L16 has significantly improved over time, and we are incredibly grateful for all of the great photographers (customers) who have supported us as we improve it. Our goal is to make sure that your camera feels newer and better over time. We hope that you like these continued updates and happy shooting!
